my wife tells me she wants to try WoW out

Wife wants to try WoW. Starting new toon with her. Suggest?

After almost three years, my wife tells me she wants to try WoW out. We have not decided on a character for her yet. We are going to sit down tonight and go through the characters so she can see what appeals to her. She is going Alliance for sure, though.

Since she is going to try it out, I plan on making a new toon so run with her so we can group together. I have asked about the Druid class before here, but I am still undecided.

I am considering a Hunter or a Druid. What do you think? I was thinking a Hunter with mining/engineering (to make bullets, scopes, etc.), but I also think the Druid sounds cool. I've been playing the caster class for almost 3 years and enjoy it, plus am comfortable with it (70 Warlock and a 67 Priest).

I see a lot of references to there being "too many" hunters, so I don't want to inadvertently fall into that, but maybe there are just "too many" hunters that cannot decently play their class, so that is where the reference comes from. Hunters seem cool cause of the traps, use of bows and guns, plus feign death ALWAYS makes me crack up.

Druids seem so versatile. Seems like, once you get past the initial pain of leveling them through 20+, they really start to become fun. You can tank, stealth, or heal, plus respec if you really start enjoying one spec over the other.

Please give me your input on my thoughts on the Hunter vs. the Druid. I've been reading all I can on wowwiki and the WoW forums, but I always appreciate the input here. I want to make the best choice I can because normal leveling time to at least 60 is about 7 months, based on my gaming schedule, so it is a big decision creating a new character.

Thanks in advance.

Druid is not a bad class to roll. My wife played a few different classes up to the mid 30-40s before she settled on her main.

The nice thing about rolling a druid to run with her is you can, at least in theory, be a nice offset to whichever class she decides to be. She rolls a melee class, you can off-dps and heal. She rolls a healer, you can go feral. She rolls a stealther, you can stealth too.

True. Hell, for all I know, she'll roll a hunter, then both bases will be covered.

Neither.

Try something easy like a rogue. For a first character, it's more fun to stealth around.

I wasn't referring to her, I was referring to me. I have looked at the rogue too, I have to say.

Paladin warrior or rogue shaman is a good combo.

Any thoughts on a Hunter for an experienced player who has never tried one?

Our mains are Warlock (me) and Druid (husband) and we have a ridiculous amount of fun playing together. We're also both able to hold our own on our own.

The alts we started are Shammy/Mage (What can I say, Im jealous of the mages AOE grinding lol) and for at least the forst 20 levels we've both been enjoying the combo again.

Does this help you? Probably not - but it's my experience.

@sbcglobal.net    We have some alts at various levels, but my wife and I play as 'lock and priest.

It's a fun combo...if only I could get her to go shadow...

I've only been back a few weeks now but I would highly recommend a Hunter to anyone playing for the first time. If they want to try something else WoW makes getting a high level character way too easy, and an alt hunter would always make a good alt to play or cash farmer.

Since the game opened there have always been a whole lot of Hunters. Their only real flaw is the difficulty they encounter getting into instance groups (good guilds can negate that). Since you have a 70 already, by yourself you can get your wife through all instances alone up past SM. Two 70's could get someone through BRD very fast as well. I did that tonight actually - two 70's and a 65 running a 53 through there - it went about five times as fast as a five man group of 55's.

My original launch character was a hunter. I'm on my second now. I've also been playing around with a warlock alt who's also in the low 40's.

I have to say the Hunter beats the pants off the lock or any other class I've played for both ease of use and power. At least in the low 40's right now, the Hunter kills faster on a constant grind and is much more survivable. He also solo's elites a lot better. I tried both the drain tank Warlock build and the full demonology build at 40 and neither one can match the grind speed of the Hunter. My warrior probably had 1/2 the grind speed of either at 40 . Being able to kill mobs over and over is one thing, but how many you can kill in (say) an hour is what I always tried to think about.

You could say Hunters are boring but to some that could be better than casting multiple dots on every single target (warlock) or changing forms all the time (druid).

Hunter Luv:
> Main DPS skill (ranged) does not rely on mana. You can DoT every target and get in a stun or arcane extra shot once or twice and maintain a constant full mana bar while grinding non-stop.
> Feign Death can save you a lot of time or even be used to drop agro if your pet losses it or you get an add (Warlocks get soulstones early on that will let you self rez on the spot but have to be refreshed every 30 minutes)
> Aspect of the Cheetah (lvl 20 is it?) really helps save a lot of time before you get a mount at lvl 20 and I actually leave it on a lot while grinding just to zip around more quickly.
> Seeing mobs on your hud can be a massive help in completing quests or avoiding bad situations
> Women in general seem to really like Hunter pets (really).

If I wanted to do a profession on my Hunter, I'd want to have the ability to make (leatherworking) my own armor pieces and ammo bags than a scope here and there or bullets that don't really add much extra damage. Engineering was always such a wasteful low return profession. So much of what you can make can only be used by other engineers.

edit: For a husband and wife playing togather, either a hunter or warlock adds a mini-tank into the mix. Either of those combined with a class that could heal or do a lot of DPS would be an amazing duo.

So..very..wrong. Hunters are one of the worst mana efficient classes out there. That is why they are buffing aspect of the viper.

I can say that druid is a damn fun class to play as an alt, and as someone else said the utility is there to match whatever you need to go with the wife. If she's a rogue you have a stealth group.. you can tank, heal, or cast depending on your gear choices.

Levelling feral has been easy and painless once i hit 30. It's slower compared to a rogue or mage, but far faster than priest or paladin.

Edit: Don't go hunter. Seriously playing this class is less fun than scooping up dog crap from the yard. yawnfest.

No, I meant the core of a Hunters DPS is bullets not mana. To maintain a constant grind speed you just have to be conservative on your extra shots.

I'm still not getting why people are saying playing hunters isn't "fun". If anything getting quests done *alone* and quickly is a blast.

My problem with the hunter class was mana conservation. I had 2 choices: 1) Kill things quickly but drink a lot or 2) Kill things slowly and never drink.

Mind you slowly on a hunter is still faster than other classes, but definitely slowly than a druid, rogue, or mage.
